Warhammer 40,000 is coming to Chess

It has been less than a month since we last heard of a Games Workshop video game licence so we must be overdue another. And it would appear we are as Hammerfall Publishing has just announced the latest Warhammer 40,000 game to hit our video game screens: Chess.

Warhammer 40,000 Chess Regicide (yes that is its full name) will take the classic abstract strategy game to the Dark Millennium as you to shuffle Blood Angels or Orks around the classic gridded board. Not only is this a fancy 3D animated game, packed to the power armour with motion captured kill animations, the game will also go beyond the classic by adding environments, weapons and upgradeable characters. No gameplay images or video exist yet but there is a fancy trailer which has been rendered in the game’s 3D engine.

Surely, these Warhammer 40,000 licensed games are getting a bit silly now? It seems that we’re getting one a month and the quality so far hasn't exactly been high. And why is it always Space Marines vs Orks? There is a galaxy full of possibilities and yet every video game concentrates on the same two factions. Where are the Eldar, Tau, Necrons or even chaos? Conquest, the upcoming card game form Fantasy Flight Games, was missing some obvious factions (Tyranids) but I think they should be applauded for managing to add 7 factions to the future LCG. Full judgement shouldn’t be passed until we actually get to play the game, and who knows; it’s crazy enough that it just might work.

Warhammer 40,000 Chess Regicide is due out on ‘multiple gaming platforms’ later this year.
