News: Game of Thrones: Westeros Intrigue

Fantasy Flight Games have officially announced Game of Thrones: Westeros Intrigue, a political card game based around our favourite fantasy television show. And yes this is based on the television show as Westeros Intrigue uses photographs and artwork from the HBO show.

As with every Game of Thrones game the aim is simple, get your buttocks on that spiky throne and rule the seven kingdoms. To gain the influence players play characters from their house into a grid attempting to block other characters and houses. There will come a point when a player cannot play anymore characters and they are eliminated from the round, the last one standing wins the round.

After each round player’s score points based on how many characters are left in their hand and after a number of round equal to the number of players scores are compared and the winner is declared.

Now the thing about this game is it is proud to show that this is from Reiner Knizia; one of the most prolific game designers in the world. The problem is Knizia’s games at worst tend to be a bit of a maths puzzle (well he does have a PhD in Mathematics) and there is a bit of a worry that this game may be a bit too abstract for such a rich theme. Westeros Intrigue’s success is going to depend on how quick it is to play and its price point. If this game takes around 30 minutes and hits under the £20 mark I can imagine it fitting into any A Song of Ice and Fire fan’s game collection.

A Game of Thrones: Westeros Intrigue is available second quarter of 2014.
