News Collider - Board Game News 23/01/19

It's Wednesday so that can only really mean one thing, it's board game news day!

This week we look to the heavens and gaze upon the red seas of Mars. We dream of terraforming it only to find it's infested with robots, Skrulls, and roll and write games.  So join us as we discover Legacy games from Stronghold, Big Trouble in Little China and some beautiful Harry Potter miniatures.

GAME ANNOUNCEMENT: CORINTH

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

Days of Wonder’s 2019 release has been announced as Corinth, from designer Sebastien Pauchon (Jaipur, The River).  In this game of trading in the Mediterranean…no wait come back…In this Roll & Write game of trading in the Mediterranean….oh stuff it.
It’ll be out in March and will set you back around £20.

GAME ANNOUNCEMENT: CAPTAIN MARVEL

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

With a Captain Marvel movie out in just a few months, it makes sense that there is a board game tie in.  So USAopoly have provided a slice of Danvers Vs Skrull in the shape of…that's right, a social deduction game very much in the vein of Bang!.

It makes for a great setting for the game, trying to work out which players are Skrull Shapershifts, who are loyal friends and even Skrull defectors. There's no news yet if you have to punch an old woman in the face.

GAME ANNOUNCEMENT: TERRAFORMING MARS LEGACY

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

Stephen Buonocore announced on Board Game Gumbo podcast that Terraforming Mars Legacy was in the pipeline from Stronghold Games.

He did stress that the game is in its infancy of development and we probably won’t see the game until 2020 or maybe even 2021, but it’s happening.

GAME ANNOUNCEMENT: TUKI

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

Tuki will challenge players to construct “inukshuk”, or an abstract three-dimensional structure representing an animal.  Players will do this using 3D Tetris-style pieces, decided by a roll of a die. Pieces must then be stacked and balance to complete the intended form.

Next Move Games will release Tuki at the Origins Game Fair in June.

GAME ANNOUNCEMENT: PALM TREES

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

WizKids is releasing a game where you get to play as a palm tree.  No, seriously, a palm tree.  It comes with tattoo style sleeves to make your arms look like the trunk of a tree!

In this game, you draw cards (palm leaves) and have to hold them as the card's text dictates.  Kind of like In A Bind/Yogi except, my guess, not as good — seriously, Yogi one of the best party games ever, especially if you enjoy looking really, really daft.

GAME ANNOUNCEMENT: ROBOTECH

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

Robotech, that cracking anime from the 80s of giant robotic mechs dishing out all kinds of hurt to any would be invaders is coming to a tabletop near you.  Again.

This time its brought to you by Battlefield Press using their Savage Worlds role-playing system.  Players can jump into the shoes of their favourite characters or create their own and the game can take part at any point in the Macross timeline.  Battlefield Press will be releasing Robotech: A Macross Saga Role Playing Game in April, with Robotech: The Role Playing Game – The Macross Saga being released by Strange Machine Games later this year.  Try not to get them mixed up because they are completely different games.

EXPANSION ANNOUNCEMENT: THE HERB WITCHES

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

The Quacks of Quedlinburg, which won the Kennerspiel Award last year,  is getting its first expansion, the Herb Witches.

The push your luck bag builder will now be able to sit 5 players and it also adds some new ingredients to be thrown into the cauldron.  No date has been confirmed for an English version, but no doubt it will quickly follow from North Star Games.

EXPANSION ANNOUNCEMENT: PUERTO RICO EXPANSIONS 1 & 2

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

Rio Grande Games has announced that the out of print expansions for BoardGameGeeks 17th ranked game, Puerto Rico will once again be available for the first time in almost a decade.

This new release will combine both The New Buildings and the Nobles into one box and will be out in April.

EXPANSION ANNOUNCEMENT: RIVALRY

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

Rivalry will be the second expansion for Roll for the Galaxy. It will add three mini-expansions to the game of galactic colonisation.  A Pioneer Dice gives players more options, more tiles and factions.  The Deal Game means players can trade resources and the Orb Game adds a special die with changeable faces that is rolled publicly.

Which all sounds like a decent amount of content, right?  Is it £80 worth of decent, I’m not sure, we’ll have to wait until February to find out.

EXPANSION ANNOUNCEMENT: FEUDUM: RUDDERS & RAMPARTS

Polyhedron Collider Board Game News

Odd Bird Games will be launching the 6th expansion for their award-winning game Feudum on the 1st of March.  This expansion adds as the name might suggest ships and castles to add further complexity and more meaty choices concerning your military might in the game.

PRE-ORDERS OPEN: KNIGHT MODELS

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

Knight Models opened up pre-orders this week for some new miniatures for their Harry Potter and Batman games.  These include a bloody fantastic Dumbledore, the League of Assassins set and the Ratcatcher, which all just remind me that I really should start playing the Batman Miniatures Game.

PRE-ORDERS OPEN: LEGACY OF LO PAN

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

If, like me, you remember a time when Kurt Russel was a bit of a badass and the idea of him as Father Christmas just does not, and will not ever, make sense, then you’ll no doubt remember Big Trouble in Little China.

Like me then, when Everything Epic released the board game of the film you also obviously had a look, now the game’s first expansion on its way, adding a sixth player and a campaign book all so you can go and kick Lo Pan’s ass.

PRE-ORDERS OPEN: STAR TREK ADVENTURES RPG THE BORG CUBE

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

Modiphius has now started taking pre-orders for their epic Borg Cube set which contains everything you need to play the Star Trek Adventures RPG, make your Trekkie friends jealous and look like a boss at the table.  The set contains everything that has been released for the game over the past 2 years.  You can check-out Captain Cocktail’s review of the game itself here – by which I mean Andy.
Obviously.

XANATHAR COMES TO ROLL20

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

Roll20 is expanding its coverage of Dungeons & Dragons with the inclusion of everything players have found in Xanathar’s Guide to Everything.  25 new subclasses, new spells, traps and magic items.  I wonder what trouble this will open up for the Champions of Chance or the Masters of Fate?

PORTALCON11

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

Portal Games celebrates its 20th birthday this Saturday (26th January).  Ignacy will be live streaming the company’s keynotes for 2019 on YouTube where he’ll discuss new releases, future plans and some upcoming secret projects.

THE MONOPOLY MOVIE

Kevin Hart (Ride Along, Central Intelligence, Jumanji) is, apparently, in final negations to star in the Monopoly Movie.  Tim Story (Barbershop, Shaft, Fantastic Four) is also in talks to direct this film, which so far has no plot.  You could say they’re taking a Chance.
Sorry.

40K FUNKO

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

Warhammer 40,000 met Funko recently at the London Toy Fair.  That’s right Funko Pop Space Marines….there’s nothing else to be said about this really, except to assure you I’m not kidding.

GET YOUR OWN FRANCHISE

Acquisitions Incorporated Dungeon Manual

Penny Arcade is releasing an official Acquisitions Incorporated Dungeon Manual, allowing players to franchise their own branch of AI.  Although any firm details about the contents of the book are limited, this will mark the first time a third-party publisher will make use of the Dungeon’s & Dragons brand outside of Wizards of the Coast or TSR.

SQUARE OFF

Polyhedron Collider Board Game News

The world’s most intelligent chess board!  That’s what Square Off is calling their chess set.  The board allows players to play a physical game of chess online, that is, the pieces can move by magic.  Magic or, more likely magnets.

Play with friends or family anywhere in the world, or against 1 of 20 different AI difficulty settings.  There’s no denying that pieces moving around the board is very cool looking, if not a little bit Harry Potter, but the price tag might be a little steep for some, $369

DIGITAL ADAPTATIONS ARE COMING

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

Dire Wolf Digital have a slew of hot board games coming to a PC, tablet or phone very soon.  The games include Mage Knight (as part of a catalogue-wide digital partnership), Sagrada, Raiders of the North Sea, Wings of Glory and Root.  This really is just the tip of the digital-boardgaming-iceberg as there are already plans to make other adaptations known later this year.

FOR F SAKE

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

The latest expansion for T.I.M.E Stories, Madame has a slight, but important typo.  NO SPOILERS - One card grants players access to Card F.  But there is no Card F, it should say card E

THE MALADY WORKSHOP

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

If you’ve ever fancied adding a deadly plague to your D&D campaign, now you can via the DMs Guide.  Medical students and avid D&D players, Bakos and Paraskevas have written the Malady Workshop for DMs to create deadly diseases for use in their games.  These diseases make use of a Malady Point system to track how deadly these poxes are…and hopefully, keep them in check before they unwittingly unleash a plague.
